Happy Emancipation day Fusion Fitness Family!!  The gym is closed but, be encouraged, we’re still here for you even though you can’t come to the gym for a day. Let’s talk about what you can do with all of those off days.

I’m using “off days” very lightly here. When I say off days, I mean your recovery days…as in those days when you’re not at the gym working out. Not to be mistaken for a cheat day where you slack off your fitness journey completely and treat yourself to all the unhealthy things you like to do. Everybody needs rest. In fact, most of the work is done outside of the gym and on those recovery days; be it in the kitchen with what and when you eat or your bedroom with your sleep quality. So what should you do on those off days? Here are some ideas:

 

OFF DAY STRETCH

Do some dynamic stretches throughout the day. This will help speed up your recovery and increase your mobility. Pay more attention to the muscles you previously stressed to reduce any soreness or tightness you may be feeling. Besides doing it throughout the day, do it at the same time that you’d normally be at the gym. Try to keep your routine so that it becomes a habit. You will feel stretched-out, energized and ready to take on your next #gymday

 

OFF DAY FUN ACTIVITY

Whatever you find enjoyable to keep you moving while keeping in mind that you’re in recovery mode. The goal here is to stay active while having fun. This may look different for everybody since what’s fun to you may not be fun to me:

  • Bike ride
  • Swim
  • Hike
  • Easy run
  • Softball, football
  • Long walk
  • House chores (oh yes that’s a workout!)
  • Take a dance class or a spin class
  • Self- defense class

If you can’t think of something that you like to do that gets you moving whether it be inside your house or outdoors, you need to try something new. Discover a new passion and move it!

 

OFF DAY FOAM ROLL

Foam rollers have been proven to help decrease muscle soreness. I highly recommend that you include it in your recovery routine.  Most gyms have foam rollers, if you can’t find it, ask. Otherwise, you can also purchase your own. We won’t get into an entire foam roller 101 right now though.

 

OFF DAY NAP

Sometimes, all your body needs to really recover fully besides all those other tips, is a good ole nap! You’ve worked hard, you’re eating right but are you giving your body all the rest it needs to rebuild and get stronger? A nap can prove to be very beneficial since a lot of the healing happens during sleep!

 

TAKEAWAY

No matter what you do on your off day, remember to:

  • Eat well because health starts in the kitchen
  • Stimulate your brain as well
  • Have fun with whatever you choose to do!
